Satan had wanted what didn't belong to him and had tried to take God's heavenly kingdom away from Him.

But God was more powerful that Satan and cast Satan and his demons back down to the earth.

When there's a fight, things get hurt. 

The earth was hurt when Satan and his demons fought against God and God's angels.

God looked over the earth and decided that He must do something to make things right again.
